Conference Room ABLearn about the ancient South Central Kansas settlement of Etzanoa with archaeologist Georgia Zavala
Etzanoa was a historic city of the Wichita people located near the Arkansas River in present-day Arkansas City, Kansas. The settlement existed from roughly 1450 to 1700 and is believed to have had a population of as many as 20,000 Wichita people. The site was rediscovered in 2017 when a teenager found a cannonball linked to a Spanish battle that occurred there in 1601. Shortly afterward, the Etzanoa Conservancy was formed to preserve the site and educate the public about its importance.
Join Etzanoa Conservancy archaeologist Georgia Zavala as she discusses her experiences working in archaeology and her efforts to preserve and share the legacy of Etzanoa. Her presentation will explore the discovery of the site, the work being done to protect it, and what it tells us about the history of Indigenous communities in the region.
