If you feel anxious about the carnival of wrapping paper discarded over the holidays, Furoshiki gift wrapping is a lovely alternative. Japanese Furoshiki gift wrapping—wrapping gifts in reusable fabric—has been practiced in Japan since the Edo Period. A similar fabric wrapping tradition from Korea known as Bojagi has been around since at least the early Joseon Dynasty. In addition to its long history in Japan and Korea, fabric wrapping is also a great way to help reduce the amount of plastic-finished, non-recyclable wrapping paper that get discarded every year. In this program, learn to sew your own fabric wrapping cloth (sized to wrap and hold a book) inspired by these two ancient traditions. Enrichment Librarian Jenny Durham will also briefly demonstrate how to wrap your completed cloth so that it's ready for gifting!
This program is perfect for people new to sewing and all materials and supplies will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required. There will be a limited number of sewing machines available to use in class, or you can bring one from home if you wish (make sure to bring at least one bobbin that works with your machine and your sewing machine's manual). Please note due to a limited number of available machines, if you use one of the library's machines you may be sharing with another learner.
