Learn how to sew 4 types of hems to give a finished look to your sewing projects. Participants should be comfortable using a sewing machine. Class size is limited, and registration is required.
Knowing how to sew a hem is a basic sewing skill and can not only give your projects a finished look, but can also be used to alter clothing, such as shortening sleeves and pant legs. It can also save you money and a trip to a tailor! In this 2-hour workshop, you will learn 4 common types of hems used in garment sewing including the single-fold (zigzag hem), blind hem, double-fold hem and rolled hem. Learn the pros and cons of each hem, which projects and fabrics they work best for, and more. Participants will get a chance to practice each of these hems with fabric swatches (fabric, thread and other sewing supplies will be provided). There will be a limited number of sewing machines available for use, or you can bring a machine from home (if you bring your own machine, be sure to bring a copy of the machine's manual and at least 1 bobbin that fits the machine). Although this class is appropriate for beginners, it is recommended that participants are comfortable with threading and using a sewing machine, as this program is not a "learn to sew" class. Class size is limited, and registration is required. Spaces fill up fast, so be sure to sign up ASAP.
