For this quarter’s selection, we will be reading The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. Winner of the 2022 Newbery Medal, this middle grade dystopian novel tells the story of Petra Peña, who along with her family and a few hundred others, leave Earth after a comet strikes the planet. After waking up on a new planet, Petra is the only one among the remaining survivors who has memories of life on Earth and must use storytelling to keep the history of her people alive.
