Join us for a deep dive into a popular book genre including essential themes, where to start, authors to know, hot and upcoming titles, recommended resources and more!
A literary subgenre of speculative fiction, Afrofuturism is more than a literary genre; it is a cultural aesthetic and philosophy that centers African American, African and Black diasporic experiences, incorporating elements of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and magical realism to challenge dominant narratives and power structures while also exploring themes of identity, culture and social justice. In this program, we’ll look at the origins of the Afrofuturism movement in literature but also touch on its influence on music and art. Learn about prominent Afrofuturist authors, recommended books for those new to the genre, upcoming titles to look for and more.
