Asian healing fiction, also known as “cozy fiction” or “cat fiction”, is a genre primarily originating from Japanese and Korean literature that has gained significant international popularity in recent years. This genre is characterized by its calm, quiet narratives set in soothing environments such as bookshops, cafes, libraries, and homes - often featuring themes of loneliness, connection, and personal healing. Common motifs include books, cats, food, and coffee, which serve as symbols of comfort and emotional refuge. In this program, we’ll talk about the history of this subgenre and its connection to both Japanese and South Korean culture and similarities and differences it has to magical realism. We’ll also highlight some popular authors to check out, notable books and new and upcoming releases.
