In this 2-part series, learn how to make your own clothes from a commercial sewing pattern. Registration is required and participants must be able to attend both sessions.
Would you like to start sewing your own clothes but are intimidated by sewing patterns? In this 2-part series, we will take you from selecting a sewing pattern to cutting out your fabric pieces so that you will be ready to start sewing your own wardrobe in no time!
In the first session, you will learn about different kinds of commercial sewing patterns, how to select a pattern appropriate for your skill level, determining size and appropriate fabric and any additional tools you may need. In the second session, you will learn about arranging and cutting out your pattern pieces, pattern markings and how to interpret the sewing instructions.
This program will not involve any hands-on sewing, but for those who wish, after the second session participants can arrange to make a book-a-librarian appointment to use one of our sewing machines in the Advanced Learning Library's Maker Space to complete their project (a library card in good standing is required to use our Maker Space sewing machine). No materials are required to participate in this program, but participants who wish to work on a project can elect to purchase or bring their own commercial sewing pattern/fabric to the second session if they'd like to cut out their pattern pieces in that session. Although this class is appropriate for beginners, it is recommended that participants be comfortable using a sewing machine if they plan to complete their project using the Maker Space sewing machine.
Please note that registration to both sessions is required; registration will close the day of the first session at 5pm or when class reaches capacity.
The Advanced Learning Library, located centrally in the historic Delano neighborhood, has many specialty services and collections including the AV Studio, local history and genealogy collections, and Friends of the Library used bookstore.
