The History of Book Banning in the United States
Banned Books Week was launched by the American Library Association in 1982 to raise awareness about books that have been banned or challenged in schools and libraries. But censorship in the United States began much earlier—dating back to the 17th century, even before the nation was officially founded.
Wichita Public Library’s Inspiration Librarian, Daniel Pewewardy, will present an engaging talk on the history of book banning in the U.S., tracing key legal decisions and landmark court cases that helped shape our constitutional right to read.
Daniel was selected by the American Library Association for its 2024 Law for Librarians Trainers Cohort and was named the Kansas Library Association’s 2024 Intellectual Freedom Champion.
